Christmas In Tenerife
Spending Christmas abroad can be an unforgettable experience, but it can also take a bit of getting used to. At least for those of us who come from Northern Europe, spending Christmas Day under a palm tree in warm and sunny Tenerife can feel a bit odd at first.
Luckily, Tenerife is a great place to spend your Christmas holiday. Here are a few ideas and tips to help you make the most of the festive season.
Celebrating Christmas in Tenerife
Like mainland Spain, Christmas here is mainly celebrated on Christmas Eve. This is when the locals have a family dinner at home with many shops and restaurants closing early. Many Spanish people also like to attend Midnight Mass (misa del gallo) after dinner.
Restaurants in the main tourist spots usually stay open on Christmas Eve, although booking ahead may be wise. You shouldn’t experience any problems in the southern resorts such as Playa de Las Americas, but if you’re staying in Puerto de La Cruz, you might want to eat early.
Many restaurants offer a Christmas lunch with turkey on Christmas Day. Boxing Day isn’t a holiday in Spain, so it’s back to business as usual.
Here are a few tips on how to get into the festive spirit over the next couple of weeks. You can follow the links to get more information (most of the websites mentioned here are in Spanish, but you can use Google to translate).
